عَبَسَ وَتَوَلّ۪ىٰٓ ﰀ

‘abasa watawallê

Il s'est renfrogné et il s'est détourné

The Prophet frowned and turned away

أَن جَآءَهُ اُ۬لَاعْم۪ىٰۖ ﰁ

An jâ'ahu la‘mê

parce que l'aveugle est venu à lui

Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَۖ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكّ۪ىٰٓ ﰂ

Wamâ yudrîka la‘allahû yazzakkê

Qui te dit: peut-être [cherche]-t-il à se purifier

But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعُهُ اُ۬لذِّكْر۪ىٰٓۖ ﰃ

Aw yadhdhakkaru fatanfa‘uhu dhdhikrê

ou à se rappeler en sorte que le rappel lui profite

Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him

أَمَّا مَنِ اِ۪سْتَغْن۪ىٰ ﰄ

Ammâ mani staghnê

Quant à celui qui se complaît dans sa suffisance (pour sa richesse)

As for he who thinks himself without need

فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَّدّ۪ىٰ ﰅ

Fa'anta lahû tassaddê

tu vas avec empressement à sa rencontre

To him you give attention

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكّ۪ىٰۖ ﰆ

Wamâ ‘alayka allâ yazzakkê

Or, que t'importe qu'il ne se purifie pas»

And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified

وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْع۪ىٰ ﰇ

Wa'ammâ man jâ'aka yas‘ê

Et quant à celui qui vient à toi avec empressement

But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

وَهُوَ يَخْش۪ىٰ ﰈ

Wahuwa yakhshê

tout en ayant la crainte

While he fears [Allah]

فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهّ۪ىٰ ﰉ

Fa'anta ‘anhu talahhê

tu ne t'en soucies pas

From him you are distracted

كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٞۖ ﰊ

Kallâ innahâ tadhkirah

N'agis plus ainsi! Vraiment ceci est un rappel

No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ﰋ

Faman shâ'a dhakarahû

quiconque veut, donc, s'en rappelle

So whoever wills may remember it

فِے صُحُفٖ مُّكَرَّمَةٖ ﰌ

Fî suhufim mukarramah

consigné dans des feuilles honorées

[It is recorded] in honored sheets

مَّرْفُوعَةٖ مُّطَهَّرَةِۢ ﰍ

Marfû‘atim mutahharah

élevées, purifiées

Exalted and purified

بِأَيْدِے سَفَرَةٖ ﰎ

Bi'aydî safarah

entre les mains d'ambassadeurs

[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels

كِرَامِۢ بَرَرَةٖۖ ﰏ

Kirâmim bararah

nobles, obéissants

Noble and dutiful

قُتِلَ اَ۬لِانسَٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥۖ ﰐ

Qutila linsânu mâ akfarahû

Que périsse l'homme! Qu'il est ingrat

Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he

مِنَ اَيِّ شَےْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥۖ ﰑ

Mina yyi shay'in khalaqahû

De quoi [Allah] l'a-t-Il créé

From what substance did He create him

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ ﰒ

Min nutfatin khalaqahû faqaddarahû

D'une goutte de sperme, Il le crée et détermine (son destin)

From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him

ثُمَّ اَ۬لسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ ﰓ

Thumma ssabîla yassarahû

puis Il lui facilite le chemin

Then He eased the way for him

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥۖ ﰔ

Thumma amâtahû fa'aqbarahû

puis Il lui donne la mort et le met au tombeau

Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him

ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ انشَرَهُۥۖ ﰕ

Thumma idhâ shâ'a ânsharahû

puis Il le ressuscitera quand Il voudra

Then when He wills, He will resurrect him

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥۖ ﰖ

Kallâ lammâ yaqdi mâ amarahû

Eh bien non! [L'homme] n'accomplit pas ce qu'Il lui commande

No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him

فَلْيَنظُرِ اِ۬لِانسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓۖ ﰗ

Falyanzuri linsânu ilâ ta‘âmihî

Que l'homme considère donc sa nourriture

Then let mankind look at his food

إِنَّا صَبَبْنَا اَ۬لْمَآءَ صَبّاٗ ﰘ

Innâ sababnâ lmâ'a sabbâ

C'est Nous qui versons l'eau abondante

How We poured down water in torrents

ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا اَ۬لَارْضَ شَقّاٗ ﰙ

Thumma shaqaqnâ larda shaqqâ

puis Nous fendons la terre par fissures

Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts]

فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبّاٗ ﰚ

Fa'ambatnâ fîhâ habbâ

et y faisons pousser grains

And caused to grow within it grain

وَعِنَباٗ وَقَضْباٗ ﰛ

Wa‘inaban waqadbâ

vignobles et légumes

And grapes and herbage

وَزَيْتُوناٗ وَنَخْلاٗ ﰜ

Wazaytûnan wanakhlâ

oliviers et palmiers

And olive and palm trees

وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْباٗ ﰝ

Wahadâ'iqa ghulbâ

jardins touffus

And gardens of dense shrubbery

وَفَٰكِهَةٗ وَأَبّاٗ ﰞ

Wafâkihatan wa'abbâ

fruits et herbages

And fruit and grass

مَّتَٰعاٗ لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَٰمِكُمْۖ ﰟ

Matâ‘al lakum wali'an‘âmikum

pour votre jouissance vous et vos bestiaux

[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock

فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ اِ۬لصَّآخَّةُ ﰠ

Fa'idhâ jâ'ati ssâkhkhah

Puis quand viendra le Fracas

But when there comes the Deafening Blast

يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ اُ۬لْمَرْءُ مِنَ اَخِيهِ ﰡ

Yawma yafirru lmar'u mina khîh

le jour où l'homme s'enfuira de son frère

On the Day a man will flee from his brother

وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ ﰢ

Wa'ummihî wa'abîh

de sa mère, de son père

And his mother and his father

وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِۖ ﰣ

Wasâhibatihî wabanîh

de sa compagne et de ses enfants

And his wife and his children

لِكُلِّ اِ۪مْرِےٕٖ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٖ شَأْنٞ يُغْنِيهِۖ ﰤ

Likulli mrî'im minhum yawma'idhin sha'nun yughnîh

car chacun d'eux, ce jour-là, aura son propre cas pour l'occuper

For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him

وُجُوهٞ يَوْمَئِذٖ مُّسْفِرَةٞ ﰥ

Wujûhun yawma'idhim musfirah

Ce jour-là, il y aura des visages rayonnants

[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright

ضَاحِكَةٞ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٞۖ ﰦ

Dâhikatum mustabshirah

riants et réjouis

Laughing, rejoicing at good news

وَوُجُوهٞ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٞ ﰧ

Wawujûhun yawma'idhin ‘alayhâ ghabarah

De même qu'il y aura, ce jour-là, des visages couverts de poussière

And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust

تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌۖ ﰨ

Tarhaquhâ qatarah

recouverts de ténèbres

Blackness will cover them

ا۟وْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ اُ۬لْكَفَرَةُ اُ۬لْفَجَرَةُۖ ﰩ

Ulâ'ika humu lkafaratu lfajarah

Voilà les infidèles, les libertins

Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones
