إِذَا اَ۬لشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ ﰀ

Idhâ shshamsu kuwwirat

Quand le soleil sera obscurci

When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]

وَإِذَا اَ۬لنُّجُومُ اُ۪نكَدَرَتْ ﰁ

Wa'idhâ nnujûmu nkadarat

et que les étoiles deviendront ternes

And when the stars fall, dispersing

وَإِذَا اَ۬لْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ ﰂ

Wa'idhâ ljibâlu suyyirat

et les montagnes mises en marche

And when the mountains are removed

وَإِذَا اَ۬لْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ ﰃ

Wa'idhâ l‘ishâru ‘uttilat

et les chamelles à terme, négligées

And when full-term she-camels are neglected

وَإِذَا اَ۬لْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ ﰄ

Wa'idhâ lwuhûshu hushirat

et les bêtes farouches, rassemblées

And when the wild beasts are gathered

وَإِذَا اَ۬لْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ ﰅ

Wa'idhâ lbihâru sujjirat

et les mers allumées

And when the seas are filled with flame

وَإِذَا اَ۬لنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ ﰆ

Wa'idhâ nnufûsu zuwwijat

et les âmes accouplées

And when the souls are paired

وَإِذَا اَ۬لْمَوْءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتْ ﰇ

Wa'idhâ lmaw'ûdatu su'ilat

et qu'on demandera à la fillette enterrée vivante

And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked

بِأَيِّ ذَنۢبٖ قُتِلَتْ ﰈ

Bi'ayyi dhambin qutilat

pour quel péché elle a été tuée

For what sin she was killed

وَإِذَا اَ۬لصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ ﰉ

Wa'idhâ ssuhufu nushirat

Et quand les feuilles seront déployées

And when the pages are made public

وَإِذَا اَ۬لسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتْ ﰊ

Wa'idhâ ssamâ'u kushitat

et le ciel écorché

And when the sky is stripped away

وَإِذَا اَ۬لْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ ﰋ

Wa'idhâ ljahîmu su‘‘irat

et la fournaise attisée

And when Hellfire is set ablaze

وَإِذَا اَ۬لْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ ﰌ

Wa'idhâ ljannatu uzlifat

et le Paradis rapproché

And when Paradise is brought near

عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٞ مَّآ أَحْضَرَتْۖ ﰍ

‘alimat nafsum mâ ahdarat

chaque âme saura ce qu'elle a présenté

A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it]

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِالْخُنَّسِ ﰎ

Falâ uqsimu bilkhunnas

Non!... Je jure par les planètes qui gravitent

So I swear by the retreating stars

اِ۬لْجَوَارِ اِ۬لْكُنَّسِ ﰏ

Aljawâri lkunnas

qui courent et disparaissent

Those that run [their courses] and disappear

وَاليْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ ﰐ

Wallayli idhâ ‘as‘as

par la nuit quand elle survient

And by the night as it closes in

وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ ﰑ

Wassubhi idhâ tanaffas

et par l'aube quand elle exhale son souffle

And by the dawn when it breathes

إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٖ كَرِيمٖ ﰒ

Innahû laqawlu rasûlin karîm

Ceci [le Coran] est la parole d'un noble Messager

[That] indeed, the Qur'an is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger

ذِے قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِے اِ۬لْعَرْشِ مَكِينٖ ﰓ

Dhî quwwatin ‘inda dhî l‘arshi makîn

doué d'une grande force, et ayant un rang élevé auprès du Maître du Trône

[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position]

مُّطَاعٖ ثَمَّ أَمِينٖۖ ﰔ

Mutâ‘in thamma amîn

obéi, là-haut, et digne de confiance

Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy

وَمَا صَٰحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٖۖ ﰕ

Wamâ sâhibukum bimajnûn

Votre compagnon (Muhammad) n'est nullement fou

And your companion is not [at all] mad

وَلَقَدْ ر۪ء۪اهُ بِالُافُقِ اِ۬لْمُبِينِۖ ﰖ

Walaqad re'êhu bilufuqi lmubîn

il l'a effectivement vu (Gabriel), au clair horizon

And he has already seen Gabriel in the clear horizon

وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى اَ۬لْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٖۖ ﰗ

Wamâ huwa ‘alâ lghaybi bidanîn

et il ne garde pas avarement pour lui-même ce qui lui a été révélé

And Muhammad is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَٰنٖ رَّجِيمٖ ﰘ

Wamâ huwa biqawli shaytânir rajîm

Et ceci [le Coran] n'est point la parole d'un diable banni

And the Qur'an is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens]

فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَۖ ﰙ

Fa'ayna tadhhabûn

Où allez-vous donc

So where are you going

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٞ لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ ﰚ

In huwa illâ dhikrul lil‘âlamîn

Ceci n'est qu'un rappel pour l'univers

It is not except a reminder to the worlds

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمُۥٓ أَنْ يَّسْتَقِيمَۖ ﰛ

Liman shâ'a minkumû ay yastaqîm

pour celui d'entre vous qui veut suivre le chemin droit

For whoever wills among you to take a right course

وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَنْ يَّشَآءَ اَ۬للَّهُ رَبُّ اُ۬لْعَٰلَمِينَۖ ﰜ

Wamâ tashâ'ûna illâ ay yashâ'a llâhu rabbu l‘âlamîn

Mais vous ne pouvez vouloir, que si Allah veut, [Lui], le Seigneur de l'Univers

And you do not will except that Allah wills - Lord of the worlds
